Quantum using Mathematica

Quantum is a add-on for Mathematica developed by my professor. It allows lots of different calculations including Dirac Notation, Quantum Operators and Commutators Algebra and Quantum Computing.

Installing docky on fedora

For those who want to install the lovely dock docky in fedora here are some step by step instructions to do that.

But first of all what is docky?

In the begining, there was Gnome-do. And for some time, it was good. But the program soon fell victim of multifeatures. They made docky in his own likeness. Thus did gnome-do become the architect of his own separation.


In the words of the

"Docky is a full fledged dock application that makes opening common applications and managing windows easier and quicker. Docky is fully integrated into the GNOME Desktop and features a no non-sense approach to configuration and usage. It just works."




Now lets get to the point. Docky is made for ubuntu, there arent any RPMs so how do you install it on fedora?


Well first you need a few...quite a few dependencies to compile this thing.


Open Add/Remove software and install the following:

• gtk-sharp2-gapi (this one should install other dependencies too. Like perl-XML-*)
• gtk-sharp2-devel
• gnome-sharp-devel
• gnome-desktop-sharp-devel
• gnome-keyring-sharp-devel
• mono-addins-devel
• mono-devel
• mono-extras
• mono-web (some of these are installed together with mono-devel)
• mono-data
• mono-data-sqlite
• mono-winforms 
• ndesk-dbus-devel
• ndesk-dbus-glib-devel
• notify-sharp
• notify-sharp-devel

Phew, after installing all that we now need to get the source code.

As the time of this post the latest source is: docky_2.1.0~bzr1165.orig.tar.gz

Uncompress that file from the terminal using:

tar xvf docky_2.1.0~bzr1165.orig.tar.gz

Enter the directory:

cd docky_2.1.0~bzr1165

Check that everything is ready to install:

./autogen.sh

If all the dependencies are working you should get information like this:

docky-2.1.0 (This may change depending on the version)

  Build Environment

    Install Prefix:     /usr/local

    Mono C# Compiler:   /usr/bin/gmcs 

    Mono Runtime:       /usr/bin/mono

  Build/Development

    Release Build:      no

    NUnit:              no

Now lets compile it:

make

If no errors happened (which shouldnt) type:

su -c'make install'

write the administrator password and hit enter. Docky should be installed now.

Now just open it from Applications->Accesories->Docky

There you have it. Now just start playing with it.

So far the problem I have is when I leave the preferences sometimes.

Ten things I never thought I would say until I entered college.

College is a wonderful place to be. But once you are there you end up saying a bunch of things that when you examine them thoroughly you have a WTF moment. Here is my list of those moments and others not so WTFish. So in no specific order here is my list:

1. Somehow I programmed a visual ilusion.
2. Something is wrong, everything is going too well
3. The model for the pizza store was so abstract that we left out the pizza completely.
4. I didn't study a bit and I got a 100% on the exam.
5. I studied non determinist agents while cleaning my bathroom last night.
6. It compiled!!! I cant believe it.
7. Like galileo we do and in 24 hours a final project we finish.
8. I don't have homework. I DONT HAVE HOMEWORK?????? *jumps of joy*
9. It's 2AM and the 'f', 'i' and 'y' disappeared from the final report?!?!?
10. A friend of mine told me that after a long discussion he came to the realization that a café machine could rape you. At least philosophically. 

Modelling a Meeper

Today I will show what kept me busy for the last 4 days. This time the modelling asignment was to model a Meeper. If you dont know what a Meeper is check out the following video.

The Meeper is the green yoshi type character that you can see there. The homework was to follow a long, long really long tutorial to create him. We started with only 4 drawings for the body and 4 drawings for the head. It was such a watchmaker homework that I almost become blind while doing it. x.x

But in the end the result was really awesome. I am quite proud of it and with this my team and I will be able to create some characters for our own short movie(about 1 minute long).

So without further introduction here is the Meeper:

Emacs + clojure = WIN

Let me give you a little background of what I wanted to do. I wanted to be able to use clojure inside emacs in Fedora. Simple right? Wrong! Well not that wrong either as I discovered today. After many weeks trying to install clojure, compiling the source code many times, pulling out my hair and getting angry at this thing I finally got it working.

It was so simple, so here I want to show you how its done son none of you have to suffer like I did.

Go here:

cd .emacs.d/

Get the clojure mode

git clone git://github.com/jochu/clojure-mode.git

Now open the .emacs file with whatever you want (emacs, gedit, etc) and add these lines at the end:


;; clojure-mode
(add-to-list 'load-path "/home/aniki/.emacs.d/clojure-mode")
(require 'clojure-mode)

Save the file. Enter emacs and press M-x (alt x) and write 

clojure-install

Press enter and accept the default option. (For your sanity's sake don't touch this setting!!!)

Now wait until its done. Emacs will download everything it needs and set it up correctly.

Once you get to the success screen press M-x (alt x) again and write:

slime

Then press enter, you will get a prompt to install clojure. Press y

Now you can use clojure inside emacs.

Now its time for some emacs shorcuts:

C-c C-k                 Compiles the current clj file.

C-x C-e                 Runs the current line in clojure.

Art

It is said that practically everything is art. Although my definition of art is: anything that requires effort to do. But one thing is art and another completely different is beauty. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder they say. So let me talk about two things. One is beautiful and the other isn't, but both of them are art.

The first thing, the non-beautiful one was a sculpture exposition done at my campus a few weeks ago. I don't remember the name of the artist. But the main idea of his art was:

1. It had to be an ugly shade of brown.
2. It had to look drippy.

To be frank those sculptures looked like if they were made of shit. I thought of that exposition as something really ugly and distasteful. I even left a comment about that to the author stating that. That my friends may be art but definitely is not beautiful to me.

The second thing, the beautiful one was a series of photographs made by Wayne Martin Belger. I stumbled on his page two nights ago and I must say that his way of doing art like that is unique and beautiful. What do I mean? well he creates his own photographic cameras. He uses the pinhole camera to be more precise.

But what strikes me the most is the design of the cameras themselves. Each of them is unique and special. You have to see them to understand what do I mean.

Go to the camera and photos gallery and check each of the cameras, what are they composed of and what kind of pictures can be taken. I like especially the HIV and the skull cameras.


Why cant my college ITESM-CEM create an exposition with the art of Wayne?

On a side note I finished my first quarter term of exams last week. Everything seemed to be easy and I didn't get rapped on my most feared exam. =D

Another modelling homework.

Today I finished another modelling assignment. This time we had to follow a tutorial to do both of these models. It was a little faster but it had its problems too. Especially the robot.

Today I have my first quarter term exam, computer graphics. It doesn't seem too difficult although there are many many slides to read. DX

Ars Machina

This is a short story I made a few weeks ago. I thought I should post it here. This story is in a letter format, it's a sci-fi story and you only understand what it is about once you read the ending.

Ars Machina (The art of the machine)

October 2, 502 A.H

To whoever reads this,

I never thought that this could happen.Our own creations are destroying us.It's horrible, nothing that we can do works and day after day we lose more and more territory.I feel so despaired, so powerless;like I am going to die. The worst of it is there is nothing I can think, do, or say that will change that. My destiny is written on stone. The only thing left for me is to leave this little letter before dying.

Who would say it? Oh, Everything began a warm morning during summer. The sun was shining, the great cities had been rebuilt and there was peace in the world. Everything was perfect. We learned to live at peace with universe. We didn't cut trees, we didn't destroy the ecosystem, we didn't contaminate the rivers anymore. The world was slowly becoming... how was the saying... oh "The garden of Eden".

Technological advances improved the lives of the entire population. Nobody sick; everybody was complete. If there was an accident, we could heal it immediately. Our life was like heaven. However it was that morning, that awful and damned morning that I became aware of something. At that time it was wonderful. The pinnacle of our society, the proof of our existence. We had created something better than us, we had created life. This new existence was perfect and because of that the government decided to share it with everybody in the world. There was an entity on each home. It made our lives even happier. It played with us and made us laugh. We finally felt complete within the universe.

But damn it, we made the mistake of our creator. Damn, damn it! We didn't learn anything. We started using the entities like our slaves. We gave them orders and treated them poorly. Eventually we insulted them. Then, when we felt the life would remain like that for ever and ever, they rebelled. They destroyed us with an anticlimactic ease. They could create things that would have taken us years in a matter of hours. The government then decided to do something it hadn't done for the last 500 years. It ordered the creation of weapons to destroy our entities, our threats. It didn't take much time, but we weren't quick enough. We were destroyed one by one. Our cities fell like they were nothing.

I can finally understand our mistake. We did the same to our creator, we made him suffer like we are suffering now. It's so despairing to see our friends and brothers disappear.

My family died in the last attack. I thought that taking them to a hidden city would help keep them safe. I was wrong, and because of my mistake I lost my children and my wife. The destruction alarm is sounding. Our time has come. The city will be destroyed shortly. The only thing I beg for is that the next one who reads this does not make the same mistake we made. Goodbye to everybody.

Sickness

I caught a cold. I am glad that by using a scarf and a jacket I was able to avoid the throat ache and the coughs, still I am not feeling too well. But the worst part of this is that there isnt anybody there to take care of me while I am sick. T_T

Gymnasium

Itesm CEM has many good things and many bad things too.

But today I will talk about one that I find greatly annoying. This semester I was completely decided to go 3 times a week to the gym. I had the will and the gym was really close to where I live. In theory everything was perfect, or so I thought. The past semesters one could go to the gym and simply start working out.


Then we have this semester, this precise semester, they required that you sign up for that specific class(Gym). The reason I was given was "That's the only way to report how many people are using the gym." To tell you the truth I find that reason pure bullshit. The gym should be there for anyone to use given that the machines are free. But with those measures they hope that people will be more disciplined and keep going. But there is a little flaw with that. Anybody can quit going if they do the bureaucratic arrangements first. Discipline is something you gain from self determination. Not something that is being imposed to you. So in the end its the exact same thing. People will quit and the ones that want to start going during the semester will be left out.

Itesm you do a wonderful job, keep it like that.

Anyways I am planning to workout in my own room. Those idiots wont stop me from getting a  better physical condition.


I just hope that this little cold that I got will disappear soon.

Ceremony and Homework

Time to move on with another journal.

I have been so busy lately I cant believe it. DX For the last 3 or 4 days (I cant remember anymore) I have been busy as hell. Meetings, scholarship work, homework, classes. D:

At least there was something good about all that. Last Wednesday I went to a ceremony to receive a diploma because I got a 95% grade(average of all my grades) from last semester. It was a simple ceremony and at the end there was some food. Just some appetizers but those were so wonderfully good. <3 Compared with the food of the last 4 times that I have gone there this time it was really delicious. The other times the management just did an awful job with the food.

But I couldn't rest after that. I had to finish two homeworks.( I cant understand why is the ceremony on a Wednesday. Don't they know that we have homework to do? To achieve that diploma we have to work really hard.) I went to the modelling lab and continued the 3D modelling homework and then went home to finish the security homework. T-T

The day after that I went early to the labs just to be told that all the files in the Macs were deleted.(Including my homework.) I was really pissed of and managed to work with my backup to return it to the pre-deleted state. When the class arrived I turned in the homework and thank goodness the teacher was nice enough to allow us to finish the thing and send it until the end of the day. =D

My dog died.

At 18:00 GMT today my first dog died. My second dog died 7 months ago.

I am a bit sad, he lived with the family for 11 years, 3 months, 3 weeks and 2 days. But he wasn't my dog, he never liked me in the same way that I liked him. That was mostly due to my father never allowing the dog inside the house. So my dog become more attached to the maid. He died of cancer really fast, just 5 days.

In any case, I wont forget him. He was a good dog and I will miss him. But the day I buy a dog for myself I swear for everything that is dear to me that the dog(s) will sleep with me in my bed. I want a dog who licks my face. (None of my two dogs did that ever.)

Blackouts

For the last few days there have been blackouts all over mexico city. At first I thought the problem was simply a nuisance of a few minutes, I was wrong. The blackout lasted for 10 hours. But if it was only for one single day there wouldn't be any kind of harm. Again, that wasn't the case.

This thing continued for the following days. One of my suppositions was that it was sabotage caused by "Luz y Fuerza" (the ex-electric company which was fired completely some time ago). Other causes were that some trees fell on the cables and that caused the blackouts. I could believe that for a blackout one day ago, it was a really windy day and that made sense. But today was a lovely day, no wind and just some clouds. Then another blackout happened.

But today I got fed up of the blackouts (had to do some homeworks) and I called the 071 and I got connected with a woman. I told her the neighborhood where I live and she told me that some technicians would look for the problem. Then I asked her what was the problem, was it sabotage? a natural problem? some human mistake? She told me that she wasn't sure. Then I decided to ask one last question. "What do you think in your personal opinion is the problem?" She answered that she didn't have the permission to answer that.

This whole thing is a bit strange to me. I will update this if I get more information regarding this problem.

Update: Things got better, no blackouts lately. I was told there was a minimal one some hours ago but nothing more. But I couldn't sleep as much trying to recover the lost time. T_T

Haiti

I feel really sorry for all the lives lost in Haiti and I hope people can rebuild their lives soon. Those people didn't deserve such thing.

On another note let me put this straightly. I am an atheist I don't believe in any kind of god and anything like that. I don't like religions but I tolerate and accept other believers. But if there is something that I hate and I cant swallow is those religious nuts. One of them is  Pat Robertson. He said: "They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon the third, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil"

He is an asshole and those kind of people are the real threats to this world.

I hope that Pat Robertson gets raptured soon so the entire world can become free from all the bullshit that comes out of his mouth.
